Inspection & Testing of Electrical Equipment
Inspection & testing of
electrical equipment is
sometimes commonly called PAT
testing (Portable Appliance
Testing).
This gives the
impression that only portable
appliances are required to be
tested, however this idea
couldn't be further from the
truth.
The correct
terminology for the above is "In-service Inspection and Testing of Electrical Equipment".
PAT Testing / Portable Appliance Testing
The
requirement for appliance inspection
and testing has been around for a
while now, but not everybody knows
what the requirements are and if it
applies to them.
These days,
it isn’t just portable appliances
that should be inspected and tested,
but all electrical equipment which
is provided by an organisation,
business or individual for the use
of their employees, customers,
visitors or anyone who uses their
facilities. This also includes the
self employed, landlords, care
homes, child care facilities,
schools and voluntary organisations,
to name but a few.
The law
requires that an employer or anyone
who supplies electrical equipment
for use by their work force or
customers / patrons in their normal
day to day activities should ensure
that their electrical equipment is
maintained in order to prevent
danger.
You may be wondering
what type of equipment is covered
under these requirements. The
following is a brief list of common
equipment; Kettle, Coffee Machine,
Computer, Printer, Photocopier, Cash
Register, Scales, TV, Fridge /
Freezer, Cooker, Dishwasher,
Electric Drill and Power Tools -
110v or 240v, Room Heater, Water
Heater, Hand Dryer, Workshop
Equipment and Machinery - 110v -
230v or 400v, such as Drills, Band
Saws, Grinders, Hoists and much much
more.
The type and frequency
of inspection and testing that is
required varies greatly on the type
of equipment and the environment it
is used in. No two businesses have
exactly the same requirements,
therefore; a site specific risk
assessment is the only recognised
way to reach that decision.
